Happy Mini New Year's Eve!

If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress. - Barack Obama

This blog focused on goal setting throughout the month of December. One of the suggestions given was to have a Mini New Year’s Eve at the end of each month. This provides an opportunity to ensure you stay focused on your goals and to make adjustments as needed.

According to Forbes, nearly 80% of people admit to abandoning their new year’s resolutions by February.

Want to ensure you stay on track with your goals for 2022? Use the recommendations below to review, adjust and celebrate your goals.

Review Your Goals

Ask yourself the following questions about your established goals:

  • How well have I done at achieving or working toward achieving these goals this month?

  • Which goals have been the hardest for me to stay focused on?

  • Do I have the goals posted somewhere that I see them every day?

  • Have any of the goals been completed? Should I take them off the list?

  • Are there goals that need to be changed?

  • Are there goals that I need to add?

The third point is very important. Studies show people who review their goals often are more likely to achieve them. Post them on your bathroom mirror or on your laptop (or both!) to ensure that they are front and center of your vision every day.

If any of your goals have already been achieved, celebrate! It's important to recognize and commend yourself for getting to your goal. Read this article (here) for suggestions of how to celebrate these wins.

Adjust Based on Lessons Learned

On lessons learned – Don’t look where you fall, but where you slipped. - African Proverb

One of my goals this year is to read three books every month- 1 for business, 1 for fun, and 1 wildcard book (this month it was Animal Farm which my daughter is reading for school).

It’s important to stop regularly and think about lessons learned about your goal attempts. As I think about my lessons learned for this goal one thing stands out….start early!

Upon reflection, I realize that I underestimated how long it would take me to read 892 pages. I am finishing the few last pages today but I don’t want to feel rushed like that at the end of every month. So, I am adjusting my plan to achieve this goal to start earlier in the month. That means today (February 1st) I’m starting the books immediately instead of waiting another week or two.

What are your lessons learned from January? What adjustments do you need to make to your goals based upon that reflection?

  • What have I learned from trying to achieve each goal this month?

  • How can I apply the positive lessons learned to my goal attempt? Can I apply those to other goals?

  • What do I want to avoid doing again? Can I apply those lessons to other goals?
